Olympic medalist encourages women to go for the gold

It was a chance for women from the community to meet, share their experiences, and learn from each other.
That was the goal of the fourth annual women's symposium at the University of Maine this weekend.
And as Cori Skall explains, the event inspired many in attendance to go for the gold, literally, as Olympic gold medalist Dominique Dawes gave the keynote address.

After appearing in the 2001 film "Save The Last Dance," actress Kerry Washington needed some extra money, so she returned to high school to serve as a substitute teacher.
On Thursday she went back to school again, but for a completely different reason.
Washington, famous for her role in "Ray," was one of more than 20 famous visitors gathered last week by first lady Michelle Obama and sent to Washington-area schools—including three in Montgomery —to talk about career goals.
In celebration of Women's History Month, the first lady invited celebrities including Washington, "The Cosby Show" actress Phylicia Rashad, Oscar nominated actress Alfre Woodard and Olympic gold medalist Dominique Dawes to speak with students. Obama herself visited students at Anacostia High School in the District.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It took Dominique Dawes a long time to feel comfortable in front of a crowd if she was clad in anything other than a leotard.
Not the norm. But perfectly understandable for an Olympic gymnast who first encountered bright lights, crowds and cameras when she was flipping and tumbling through her routines.
Now -- 13 years after she was part of the "Magnificent Seven" women's gymnastic team that won gold at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta --- Dawes is focusing on being a motivational speaker and says that she is finding her voice.
